The message arrived at 11:24, through WhatsApp, from someone who had found us on Google. One line: “Hi, How much you cost for fixing back of an iPhone.”

That is almost word for word how this enquiry always arrives. Nobody asks about laser separators or adhesive curing times. They ask what it costs, whether you can come to them, and how long they will be without their phone. So that is what we answer first.

Quote out at 11:27, three minutes later. Agreed at 11:34, and we had the collection address by 11:36 — twelve minutes from first message to a confirmed job. Final price AED 450, including collection and delivery.

Why a 14 Pro Max back glass is not the same job as an iPhone 14

This is the part almost every customer gets wrong when they call for a price, and it is worth understanding before you accept a quote from anyone.

With the iPhone 14 and the 14 Plus, Apple redesigned the internal chassis so the rear glass lifts off as its own separate panel. It made the repair genuinely quick and genuinely cheap — a rare piece of good news for anyone who drops their phone.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max did not get that redesign. On those two models the rear glass is bonded directly to the frame. There are only three ways to get it off: separate it with a laser, grind and pick the remaining glass out by hand, or replace the entire rear housing and migrate every internal component across.

If a shop quotes you the same price for an iPhone 14 and an iPhone 14 Pro Max back glass, they have not understood which phone you own.

We used laser separation on this one, which is what we use on any Pro or Pro Max where the finish matters. It lifts the bonded glass cleanly without the heat soak that hand-picking needs, and it leaves the frame edge sharp rather than scarred.

Two components sit directly behind that glass and both are easy to destroy: the wireless charging coil and the MagSafe magnet array. On this phone the magnet array had survived the drop intact, so we cleaned it and carried it over to the new panel rather than replacing it. The fine glass dust that separation produces will also find its way into the speaker mesh and microphone ports if the device is not masked properly first — that one does not show up on the day, it shows up a week later when the caller says you sound muffled.

Getting into Shoreline 2

Palm Jumeirah is one of the harder addresses in Dubai to service quickly, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Everything funnels through a single trunk road, the fronds are gated, and the Shoreline buildings will not let a courier past reception on the resident's say-so alone.

Our rider Zafar reached Shoreline 2 at around 14:30. He went to reception, gave his details, and the receptionist cross-checked his Emirates ID against them before allowing him up to the apartment to collect the phone. That check is why we send the same named riders to the Palm and why we ask customers to confirm the rider's name when they book — it turns a potential half-hour standoff at a reception desk into about five minutes.

On the bench — and the bit we did not expect

The phone was powered down, the SIM tray removed and the display side masked before anything else. Laser separation lifted the bonded glass, the remaining fragments came out in sections, the old adhesive was cleared and the MagSafe array was cleaned and transferred across.

Then we found the frame was slightly bent.

This matters more than it sounds. A new rear panel seated onto a frame that is even marginally out of true will not sit flush. You get a hairline gap along one edge, the panel takes the next knock unevenly, and it cracks again months later — and the customer, reasonably, blames the repair rather than the drop that caused the bend in the first place.

So we stopped, called the customer, explained what we had found and what it would mean if we simply glued the new panel on regardless. He approved the extra work. We straightened the frame, then seated the new panel properly. There was no additional charge for it — the quote he agreed at 11:34 is the amount he paid at 16:22.

That is also where this repair goes wrong for a less experienced technician. Not the laser, not the adhesive — the temptation to fit the panel to a bent frame because the phone looks fine when it leaves the workshop.

What we tested before the phone went back

A back glass replacement is only finished when everything sitting behind that panel has been proven to still work. On this device we checked, in order:

Price and warranty

This repair cost AED 450, including collection from Palm Jumeirah and delivery back. That covered the OEM replacement panel, the laser separation, straightening the bent frame and the full test sequence above.

If your back glass is cracked, read this first

A cracked rear panel is not urgent the way a cracked screen is, but it is not purely cosmetic either, and there are three reasons not to leave it for months.

The crack keeps spreading. Every time the phone flexes in a pocket or takes a small knock, the fracture grows. A panel that could have been laser-separated cleanly starts shedding fragments, which turns a straightforward job into a longer and more expensive one.

The seal is gone. The rear glass is part of the phone's water resistance. Once it is broken that protection is finished, and in a city where you move between air conditioning and 45-degree humidity a dozen times a day, condensation alone can cause trouble.

It costs you more at resale. In the Dubai second-hand market a cracked back knocks far more off the asking price than the repair costs to do.

If you are going to leave it a while, put a case on it. It contains the fragments, slows the crack, and keeps the panel in one piece until you are ready.
